Notary Public Registration
The Mahoning County Bar Association is the official provider of Notary Public registration and renewal for Mahoning County, Ohio.
The Mahoning County Bar Association can process Notary Public Applications for residents in any county throughout Ohio. Although, when you commission comes back from Columbus, you must file your commission in the county that you reside.
Qualifications for becoming a Notary
To become a notary for the State of Ohio, the applicant must be a resident of the state, who is eighteen years of age or over and be of good moral character.
What is a Notary Public?
“A Notary public will have power throughout the state”
A notary public may perform the following duties:
- Administer oaths or affirmations
- Certify acknowledgments
- Take and certify depositions, and other instruments in writing
- Issuing subpoenas in the taking of depositions
- To receive, make and record notaries protests.
When you want to become a notary public, you come to the Bar Association to pick up the application and the manual, between the hours of 9:00 a.m. and 4:00 p.m. A $50.00 fee is payable at this time. After you study the booklet and fill out your application, you call the Bar Office (330-746-2933) to make an appointment to take the test. We give the test Monday thru Friday at 10:00 a.m. and 2:00 p.m. There is no additional charge for taking the test. The only thing we ask is that you call a day or two ahead of time to make an appointment.
After you pass the test there is a form to fill out; you take it to the Mahoning County Courthouse and get a Judge of the Common Pleas Court to sign it. Then you mail that form to Columbus along with $15.00. When your commission comes back from Columbus within a week to ten days, you will need to record it in the Clerk of Courts Office, at the County Courthouse in which you reside. The cost for filing your commission in Mahoning County is $7.00.

Renewal of Notary Public
You must be a resident of Ohio and know when your commission expires. It is recommended that you come to the Bar Office for a renewal form or if your Commission has expired within one year between the hours of 9:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. or 1:30 p.m. to 3:30 p.m. There is a $50.00 fee payable when you pick up the form. You will fill out a form; take it to the Mahoning County Courthouse to get a Judge of the Common Pleas Court to sign it. Then you mail that form to Columbus with $15.00. When your commission comes back within a week to ten days from Columbus, you will need to record it at the Clerk of Courts Office in the County Courthouse in which you reside. The cost for filing your commission in Mahoning County is $7.00.
When a commission has lapsed over one year, you are required to be re-tested.
